Ramp Tips: When choosing a ramp, the length, and therefore the angle of the ramp, depends on,

• The height to be raised
• The weight of the chair/vehicle and user
• The strength of the helper or user
• Space available

As a general guide a raise of 1 in 12 is suggested. For loading an unmanned wheelchair or scooter into a vehicle, a higher gradient can be used, but this should not exceed 1 in 3. Ultimately you should exercise plain-old common sense!

Quick Ramp Calculations

• To work out the gradient use the following equation, divide the length by the height eg 100cm ramp on a 10cm step would be a 1:10 gradient.
• To work out the length of ramp required multiply the height by the gradient required eg if you want a ramp for a 15cm step & you would like the recommended 1:12 gradient multiply the step height of 12cm by 12 which = a ramp of 144cm
